Franz von Defregger
Franz Defregger (1835-1921) became famous through his Austrian and Bavarian genre and historical paintings. With his portraits, themes of everyday peasant life and scenes of the Tyrolean uprising in 1809, he was already very successful in his lifetime. In 1883 Defregger was knighted and was awarded the Order of the Bavarian Crown. From 1861 Defregger studied in the Academy of Arts in Munich where he was Professor of Historical Painting in the composition class from 1878 to 1910.
